Virginia Urban Archery Hunting

The Virginia Urban Archery Hunting season is getting more and more popular as the deer population rapidly increases each year, causing deer to move into the urban areas of many states ("Urban Archery Season Aimed at Deer Population Reduction"). An urban area is a region surrounding a city which is also known as a town, city, or suburb ("Google"). Deer are constantly flooding into urban areas damaging peoples properties by eating grass, flowers, and marking territory. The deer numbers tend to increase more in urban areas due to the lack of hunting and the amount of food sources available to these animals. Deer are constantly crossing roads causing more and more accidents per year which have resulted in many human injuries. The more these deer are around human activity, the more comfortable they get with people causing them to be more careless and threatening (“Chatham considers urban archery”). Urban Archery season extends the hunting season and gives people opportunities to hunt during the times of year they would not be originally be hunting ("Deer & Deer Hunting Forums: White Tail Deer Hunting Forum").
The Virginia Urban Archery season starts on the first Saturday in September and runs through the day before regular archery season, the first Saturday of October. Urban Archery season will start again after the regular deer season, on the first Saturday of January to the last Saturday in March. Only does and antlerless bucks may be killed during these time periods; any deer whose antlers go above the hairline are illegal to kill ("Thread: Who Is Doing Urban Archery in Virginia?"). The killing of an antlered deer during Urban Archery season could result in very high fines or a suspended hunting license. The cities that may be hunted are Chesapeake (not Department-owned lands), Colonial Heights, Danville, Emporia, Franklin, Fredericksburg, Galax, Hopewell, Lexington, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Radford, Richmond, Staunton, Suffolk, and Winchester. The towns of Altavista, Amherst, Bedford, Blacksburg, Blackstone, Christiansburg, Farmville, Halifax, Hurt, Independence, Irvington, Kenbridge, Pearisburg, Pulaski, Richlands, Rocky Mount, Saltville, Smithfield, Stuart, Tazewell, and West Point; and, the counties of Chesterfield, Fairfax, James City, Roanoke, and York may be hunted during Urban Archery season. Recently added was the Town of Hurt. National Forests and Department-owned lands may not be hunted. Licenses, bag limits, and tagging requirements are the same for every archery season in Virginia. Urban Archery hunting is allowed on Sundays only with written permission of the landowner or a family member of the landowner. Hunting is to be done 200 yards away from a place of worship or more. Hunting within those boundaries is strictly forbidden. ("Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries"). An archery license must be purchased in order to do any kind of archery hunting in Virginia (James City County Urban Archery Program). Any archery weapon may be used to harvest a deer such as a recurve bow, reflex bow, self bow, longbow, composite bow, takedown bow, compound bow, and crossbow. All deer killed must be checked by calling 1-866-GOT-GAME, or at a Big Game check station unless given permission otherwise. A person may not go above the bag limit for deer unless bonus tags are purchased. “Deer antlerless only” tags are the only bonus tags available to be purchased. If a person is caught without tagging a deer they have killed, his hunting license could be taken away for a period of time or fines could be made. Deer may not be killed by the use of any dog or dogs. The shooting of any archery weapon upon another property without the permission of the landowner is not allowed ("Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries"). The number of hunters in Virginia has been decreasing the past several years causing the deer population to increase. Virginia needs more hunters in order to maintain a healthy deer population.
